The North Carolina A&T Aggies reign as the No.1 team in HBCU football is over.
For 384 days the Aggies were No. 1 in the BOXTOROW Coaches and Media Polls, but dropped to No. 2 after Saturday’s 16-13 shocking loss to unranked Morgan State, who got its first win of the season. Tennessee State, who was last No. 1 in both polls in Week 7 of 2012, is the top team in all of HBCU football. The Tigers earned a 41-40 victory over fellow OVC foe Eastern Illinois.
The first place votes were split in the coaches poll, with the Tigers receiving 15-of-20 first place votes. Prairie View A&M and Howard both won – the Panthers defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff 62-13 and the Bison defeated Bethune-Cookman 41-35 in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis – but traded places from last week, PV moving to No. 5 and Howard to No. 6. Norfolk State entered the poll for the first time this year at No.8 after its 17-7 victory over South Carolina State. Florida A&M re-entered the poll at No. 9 after defeating 31-13.
There was slight movement in the media poll, as nine of the teams in the poll all won on Saturday. Bowie State and Prairie View A&M both tied for the No. 6 spot with the Panthers moving up one spot from last week, while the Bulldogs moved down a spot. Alcorn State moved up one spot from last week and is No. 5, while Norfolk State enters the poll for the first time this season at No. 10.
