Carried the ball 32 times for 319 yards and three touchdowns and had three receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown as Virginia Union defeated Valdosta State 45-40. He scored on touchdown runs of 22, 52, and 50 yards, the 22-yarder being the game winner.

Byers first committed to Sacred Heart before coming to Virginia Union. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Year in 2021 after accumulating 910 rushing yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry and leading the conference with 12 rushing touchdowns.
