The Show

FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW w/ Donal Ware debuted August 20, 2005 on five radio stations across the country.

BOXTOROW currently airs on SiriusXM as well as in over 30 radio markets across the country. This talk show talks about the hot and relevant issues of the days as well as talking with the top entertainers and sports figures of the day.

Historically Black Colleges and University’s (HBCUs) are successful in producing outstanding student-athletes and athletic programs and have made great strides for over 100 years. But during most of that time, schools were underrepresented in their coverage by the media.

FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW is the only nationally syndicated sports talk show which also places major emphasis on HBCU Sports. The show talks all sports and has broadcast live from Radio Row at The Big Game and from NBA All-Star Weekend as well as from the U.S. Open. BOXTOROW, as it is also known, was credentialed to cover the Super Bowl for the first time during the Super Bowl in Tampa in 2009. Other events covered include MLB All-Star Games, NBA Finals, NHL All-Star Game and the Daytona 500.

The Host

Donal Ware founded FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW in 2005 and has transformed what started as a radio show with five radio stations into a brand.

Ware’s passion for sports, including HBCU sports, has lifted BOXTOROW to being heard in many markets across the country and into a deal where BOXTOROW is heard each week on SiriusXM. But it’s not just his passion for sports. He likes talking to people and helping to convey their message to his audience.

Growing Up

Ware grew up in the Washington, DC area and calls Silver Spring, Md. home, by way of Hyattsville, Md. (Lewisdale). Donal grew up listening to Ken Beatrice on the show Sports Call on WMAL and listening to Redskins, Bullets (now Wizards), Capitals, and Baltimore Orioles games on the radio, wanting to be on the radio one day.

He also read Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon in The Washington Post, wanting also to be a writer one day. He grew up watching James Brown, George Michael, and Glen Brenner on television and hoped to be on TV as well.

BOXTOROW has afforded him the opportunity to be on all three mediums.

College Years

A graduate of Morgan State University, Ware has interviewed the likes of Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, Michael Vick, Stephen Curry, Jim Brown, Tony Dungy, Mike Tyson, Chris Paul, Jerry Rice, Simone Biles. His love of pop culture, which he has incorporated into the program, has led to interviews with A-listers such as Ludacris, Kevin Hart, Snoop Dogg, Joss Stone, T.I., the late Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Taraji P. Henson, Common, and Ice Cube, just to name a few.

Also during his days at Morgan, he learned and honed his play-by-play skills under the Voice of the Bears Lamont Germany. Additionally while a student at MSU, he interned at B.E.T. where he also learned under sportscaster George Johnson, when “sneaking” away from the entertainment show Screen Scene, where he produced features, including the first national feature on singer/entertainer Ray J.

Donal’s Career Goals

He aims to bring you more than just sports talk each week, but more of an experience as he takes you on a journey through the world of HBCU sports and pro sports and interviews with top sports and entertainment figures.

His knowledge of HBCU sports, particularly football, is second to none and led to him voicing the Black college video game BCFx, The Doug Williams Edition, along with Jonathan Coachman, where he became known as the John Madden of Black college football. He has also been honored as CIAA Broadcaster of the Year.

Ware started his career in collegiate athletics media relations as sports information director at North Carolina A&T, where he worked with coaches and student-athletes, including Maurice Hicks, who went on to play in the National Football League. After two years at A&T, North Carolina State University reached out and offered Ware the position of Assistant Media Relations Director, becoming one of – if not the first – Black media relations assistant director at an ACC school. There, he worked closely with future NFL star quarterback Philip Rivers. His career continued as Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Information/Marketing at Shaw University before he got out of the sports information business.

He has made appearances on various television programs including ESPN’s Outside The Lines.

Ware started the Shaw Bears Sports (Radio) Network and served as its play-by-play voice. He also helped to start the NCCU Sports Network and served as its play-by-play voice. He has also served as play-by-play radio voice for Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State.

Currently he is the play-by-play radio voice for North Carolina A&T State football and Shaw basketball.
