The Texas Southern baseball team won its second SWAC Tournament championship in three seasons two weeks ago defeating defending champion Alabama State 4-2 in 13 innings. The Tigers didn’t lose a single game in the tournament despite a 20-32 overall record, and beat the favorite Jackson State twice.
For head coach Michael Robertson, who is in his ninth season as the coach at TSU, it was his fourth overall SWAC Tournament championship; the other two coming in back-to-back seasons (’06, ’07) as the head man at Prairie View A&M.
While Friday’s game in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional against LSU (2:30 p.m. CT) may look like a David vs. Goliath matchup, so was the case in 2006 when Robertson was coaching PV and his team almost upset the host Owls before falling 6-5.
Robertson sat down with BOXTOROW host Donal Ware to talk about the Tigers season, SWAC championship and Baton Rouge Regional. Listen to the interview below.
