Remembering Lou Brock: In his own words, 1939-2020

2020 continues to be a tough year as the HBCU community and baseball mourns another loss. Lou Brock, an alum of Southern University, who played for the Chicago Cubs and most notably for the St. Louis Cardinals, passed away September 6 at the age of 81. Mr. Brock was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 after a stellar career in which he batted .293, surpassed the 3,000-hit plateau, and retired as the all-time stolen base leader with 938. He helped lead St. Louis to two world championships in 1964 and 1967.

In February 2014, BOXTOROW host Donal Ware sat down for an in-depth interview with Mr. Brock and spoke with him about playing at Southern and winning the NAIA national championship, his relationship with Buck O’Neil the first Black coach in Major League Baseball, the discrimination against him as he approached Ty Cobb’s stolen base record, and a myriad of other conversations.
