We thought 2020 was a tough year in terms of loss, but 2021 has not started out any better. John Chaney, the former Temple head men’s basketball coach who did as much off the court as he did on, passed away on January 29 at the age of 89. The loss was felt around the entire sports world and in particular in college basketball. In 24 seasons at Temple, his teams participated in the post season 23 times. He won 526 games as head coach. What is lesser known about Coach Chaney is that he coached at Cheyney State for 10 years and led the Wolves to the Division II national championship in 1978. What may be lesser known is that he is a Bethune-Cookman graduate and was an All-American for the Wildcats. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. Donal Ware had a chance to catch up with Coach Chaney in an exclusive conversation on FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW in 2013 to talk about his career, including his time at Bethune-Cookman.
