ReCoRd bReAkInG: A&T’s Tarik Cohen is MEAC’s all-time leading rusher

There are many words that you could use to describe North Carolina A&T running back Tarik Cohen.

Dynamic. Humble. Leader.

You can now use the word record-setter.

Cohen rushed for 200 yards including a 62-yarder in the fourth quarter as the Aggies beat Norfolk State 35-0 in front of 13,005 at Aggie Stadium and a nationally televised audience on ESPNU.

Cohen broke the record during the 62-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter, breaking the previous mark set by Will Ford who played for South Carolina State from 2006-09 and in the process gave Cohen his sixth career 200-yard rushing performance which also broke the school record previously held by Maurice Hicks.

“It was in the back of mind,” said Cohen, a senior from Bunn, N.C. “Once I started to get near it, and we were at a comfortable lead, I started pressing. I was a little mad and frustrated that I wasn’t there yet.  But when I broke the last one, it was like a relief and a weight taken off me.”

Coming into the game, Cohen needed just 160 yards to break the all-time rushing mark.  The flow of the game in the first half made it seem like Cohen would not get the record on this day.  While he had 66 yards rushing on 13 carries at halftime, the Spartans defense had done a good job of limiting Cohen’s big runs.  In the third quarter, the offensive line did a good job of opening some holes and Cohen started to get loose, even breaking off a 44-yard run.

After stopping the Spartans on fourth down, the Aggie offense took over 1st and 10 from their own 38.  Redshirt-senior quarterback Oluwafemi Bamiro handed the ball off to Cohen who ran off right tackle and outran the NSU defense.  A member the A&T track and field team, Cohen finished the run off leaning across the goal line like a sprinter trying to get that extra edge head first across the finish line.

The Aggies still have at least six more games remaining and Cohen has rushed for 670 yards on the season.  He is approaching his fourth-straight 1000-yard rushing season and now has 4,701 rushing yards and is 299 yards shy of rushing for 5,000 yards.
