Jackson State leads the BOXTOROW HBCU Superlative Awards with two players and its head football coach receiving three of the six awards, which were announced on Wednesday. The awards are part of The HBCU college football All-America team, released on Monday.

Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders was voted Offensive Player of the Year, while Tigers’ linebacker Aubrey Miller was selected Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year. For the second year in a row, Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders was voted Coach of the Year.

In two of the closer votes, Florida A&M kicker Jose Romo-Martinez was voted Special Teams Player of the Year, while Livingstone defensive back Kevin Larkins, Jr. was named Rookie of the Year.

North Carolina Central quarterback Davius Richard was named Impact Player of the Year, an award given by BOXTOROW.

Sanders, a sophomore from Canton, Texas, is third in FCS in passing touchdowns (36), fourth in completion percentage (70.1), fifth in passing yards (3,409) and passing yards per game (284.1). Last year’s Impact Award winner, Sanders has eight games where he’s thrown three or more touchdown passes this season and five 300-yard passing games.

Miller, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., is tied for the lead in the SWAC in forced fumbles (4) and is third in tackles (106). The SWAC Defensive Player of the Year has also registered 11 tackles for loss, two sacks and six pass breakups.

Romo-Martinez, a graduate student from Banning, Calif., is tied for ninth in FCS in field goals made (17), connecting on 17-of-22 field goals long for a connection rate of 77.3 percent.

Larkins, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale was selected to The HBCU All-America team after leading the country in interceptions per game (.9) and is tied for the lead with eight interceptions. He returned those interceptions for 161 yards, third in country, with one returned for a touchdown. He also registered four pass breakups and 40 tackles (32 solo).

Richard, a junior from Belle Glade, Fla., is fifth in FCS in points responsible for per game (20.4), sixth in points responsible for (224). In total, he is responsible for 37 touchdowns (24 passing, 13 rushing). He leads the MEAC in passing yards (2,486), passing touchdowns (24), efficiency (155.3, 12th in FCS), and is completing 63 percent of his passes. Richard has carried the ball 108 times for 691 yards and is averaging 6.4 yards per carry which leads the MEAC. He also leads the MEAC and is 11th in FCS in total offense (288.8).

Sanders finished his third season as the head coach at Jackson State. He has led the Tigers to a 12-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the HBCU Coaches and Media Polls. JSU will take on North Carolina Central on Saturday in Atlanta for the HBCU national championship.

On Monday, BOXTOROW will release the final polls which will help determine the HBCU national champion.
