Jackson State put an exclamation point on its No. 1 ranking in HBCU football, as the tigers defeated previous No. 1 Alabama A&M 61-15 on Saturday in Huntsville, AL as the BOXTOROW HBCU Coaches and Media Polls were released on Monday. Alabama A&M, in the top five last week, fell to No. 7 in the coaches poll and No. 8 in the media poll. Elsewhere, Alcorn State and Florida A&M both won and benefited by moving up.
In the coaches poll, The Tigers were a unanimous selection, receiving all 18 first place votes. North Carolina A&T and Prairie View A&M remained No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Norfolk State made the biggest jump, three spots to No. 6 this week. No. 9 Alabama State reentered the poll after its win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, while Mississippi Valley State defeated Southern for its second straight win and moved into the top 10 for the first time this year.
In the media poll, Bowie State got a big win over previously ranked Chowan and moved up two spots to No. 6. Albany State entered the poll for the first time this year at No. 7 and Savannah State entered for the first time at No. 10.
The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches and media polls are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. The coaches poll, in its 12th year is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll, in its 14th year, is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
