HBCU NFL Draft Chronicles: Alex Taylor Podcast

Since 2006, BOXTOROW has talked with HBCU football players who have a chance to hear their names called in the NFL Draft. That first year, we spoke with several players including Antoine Bethea (Howard), and Tavaris Jackson (Alabama State) who both went on to be drafted that year.

In the midst of COVID-19 the draft will still continue – virtually – and take place April 23-25. Today we converse with former South Carolina State star offensive lineman Alex Taylor. Taylor had a stellar senior season, on his way to being named BOXTOROW All-American. He was invited to and participated in the Senior Bowl where he excelled. He was the only player from an HBCU invited to the NFL Scouting Combine.

Taylor’s story is interesting. He was a basketball player who only played in a handful of football games in high school. A native of Moncks Corner, SC, he signed on to play football at Appalachian State. He eventually transfered to South Carolina State where originally he was a member of the basketball team. He decided to return back to football for the start of the 2018 season and with his 6’9″ frame had an immediate impact.

Taylor talked with BOXTOROW host Donal Ware about his career at SCSU which included the Bulldogs winning a share of the MEAC title in 2019, his training for the draft during coronavirus, and about his experience at the Senior Bowl and Combine. Click to download or listen to the podcast.
