Preseason HBCU college football All-America team: Alabama State, FAMU lead the way with the most selections
boxtorow.com
In 2023, the Florida A&M Rattlers were named HBCU national champions and look to defend their crown in 2024. The Rattlers have a new coach in James Colzie III, but have a wealth of talent returning including four players named to The 2024 HBCU college football Preseason All-America team presented by BOXTOROW.
Of FAMU’s four selections, the Rattlers return one of the best defensive football players in the country in defensive back Kendall Bohler, a member of the 2023 HBCU All-America team. Bohler is a lockdown corner who recorded 39 tackles (27 solo) and two tackles for loss. He is in his fourth season with the Rattler program.
The Alabama State Hornets led the way with five selections, including linebacker Rico Dozier, a transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff who was also a member of the 2023 HBCU All-America team. Dozier adds his presence to a good Hornets defense, bringing with him a SWAC-leading 128 tackles (63 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. He recorded double digit tackles in nine games last season.
One of the other many highlights of the team is Virginia Union running back Jada Byers, a two-time HBCU All-American. Byers led the CIAA in rushing (1,186), rushing touchdowns (16, 10th in the nation) and attempts (205). He averaged 5.8 yards per carry and rushed for 100 or more yards in a game seven times and 200 or more yards in a game twice.
In total, 17 programs are represented of the 30 selections.
BOXTOROW has named All-America teams since 2007 based on voting by national media who cover HBCU football.
