The HBCU college football regular season is over. There is a bowl game left to be played which will help determine the HBCU national champion.
It is now award season.
The HBCU college football All-America team was announced on Monday. Now, North Carolina Central quarterback Davius Richard and Tennessee State defensive lineman Terrell Allen are just two that are part of the BOXTOROW HBCU Superlative Awards, announced on Wednesday. The awards are part of The HBCU college football All-America team.
Richard was voted Offensive Player of the Year, while Allen was selected Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year. Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons was voted Coach of the Year.
In a very close vote, North Carolina A&T kick returner Taymon Cooke was named Specialist of the Year, while in a runaway vote, South Carolina State running back Jawarn Howell was named Rookie of the Year.
Morgan State linebacker Erick Hunter was named Impact Player of the Year, an award given by BOXTOROW.
Richard, a graduate student from Belle Glade, Fla., was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Year earlier this month. He leads FCS in points responsible for (21.3), total offense (255.2), scoring (9.8, No. 3 in FCS), passing touchdowns (21), and rushing touchdowns (18, tied for FCS lead). He completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 2,177 yards and is sixth in FCS in touchdown to interception ratio (21-4). Richard was last year’s BOXTOROW Impact Player of the Year.
Allen, a senior from North Little Rock, Ark., leads FCS in tackles for loss (28), solo tackles for loss (25), and sacks (14). The Big South-OVC Defensive Player of the Year is tied for the FCS lead in forced fumbles (5) and his 13 solo sacks for loss is second in FCS. He recorded 65 tackles (44 solo) and recorded four or more sacks in a game twice, while recording four or more tackles for loss in a game four times.
Cooke, a junior from Bluefield, Va., is tied for the FCS lead in kickoff returns for TDs (3). He leads the CAA and is second in FCS in kickoff return average (34.2) and tallied 16 returns for 547 yards.
Howell, a freshman from Mooresville, N.C., averaged 7.9 yards per carry which leads FCS. The MEAC Freshman of the Year leads the MEAC in rushing (785), rushed for eight touchdowns and had three games of 100 or more yards rushing, including a 283yard, three-touchdown performance versus Howard (11/4). He also caught 10 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
Hunter, a junior from Capitol Heights, Md., helped lead the Bears to the top defense in the MEAC (17th in FCS) and the top scoring defense (23rd in FCS). “E40” leads the MEAC in tackles per game (7.5), recording 75 tackles (47 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. He is a Buck Buchanan Award finalist and was named BOXTOROW National Player of the Week (9/4) after registering 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss as the Bears defeated nationally ranked Richmond. His fourth quarter sack-fumble, which was recovered by the Bears, led to the Bears’ go-ahead touchdown.
Simmons is in his sixth season as head coach of the Rattlers. He helped lead the Rattlers to their first SWAC championship this season. The Rattlers are the No. 1 team in HBCU football and have a chance to win their first HBCU national championship since 2001 win they face off against Howard on Saturday.
On Monday, BOXTOROW will release the final polls which will help determine the HBCU national champion.
