The 2023 HBCU college football season has almost come to an end which means some of the top players in HBCU football will have a chance to decide who the national champion will be.

No. 1 Florida A&M will face No. 2/4 Howard in Atlanta on Saturday which will be the final game of the season.

The two teams combined for six players and are just two of the teams that have multiple players on The HBCU college football All-America team powered by BOXTOROW, released on Monday.

BOXTOROW has named the All-America team since 2007, based on voting by media who cover HBCU football.

Last season’s national champion North Carolina Central Eagles led the way with five selections. Benedict had three selections, while Alabama State, Grambling, Southern, Virginia State, and Virginia Union had two apiece.

Florida A&M linebacker Isaiah Major, Texas Southern running back LaDarius Owens, and FAMU offensive lineman Cameron Covin received the most votes of all players. Named the SWAC’s Defensive Player of the Year last month, Major is fourth in the SWAC in tackles (100), second in solo tackles (59), and has registered 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and had a 40-yard interception pick six. He recorded three pass breakups, 11 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks against USF (9/9).

Owens leads all HBCU players and is fourth in FCS in rushing yards (1,373). He leads the SWAC and is eighth in FCS in yards per carry (6.8) and leads the SWAC in rushing touchdowns (11). He rushed for 100 or more yards in a game seven times and rushed for 200 or more yards in a game twice. He rushed for 211 and three touchdowns on 24 carries against Alcorn State (11/11).

Covin anchors a Rattler offensive line that leads the SWAC in scoring (30.7), passing offense (232.2), and is second in total offense (376.1).

Major and Owens are just two players on the ballot for The HBCU Superlative Awards which will be announced on Wednesday. The awards include players of the year on offense and defense, specialist of the year, rookie of the year, coach of the year, and the impact player award.

In total, 16 programs are represented of the 31 selections.
