We’re extraordinary. We’re champions because we are an HBCU. Our culture. Our people. Who we are… my kids hear this day in and day out: you were born to be kings and queens and don’t forget that… everytime they slip up and use it (the term HBCU) in an incorrect way, it’s for us to tell them no, this is how you use that and don’t forget it.
Duane Ross on how the term HBCU is applied to North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T director of track and field programs Duane Ross is building a dynasty in Aggieland. His men’s and women’s programs finished third and fourth, respectively in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, OR in June. In his ninth season as head coach at N.C. A&T, these were the programs best finishes. But A&T’s goal is to win the national championship. Ross talks to BOXTOROW host Donal Ware about how close A&T is to winning it all, how mainstream media applies the term HBCU to A&T, about coaching his true freshman All-American son, about building the program, and about the Aggies’ performance in the championships.
